Bandalasta – What is it?
is the trade name for a range of decorative moulded articles first produce by Brookes & Adams in the 1920’s “the ideal picnic and dainty table ware”.
A range of articles for camping, caravanning, yachting along with tableware for the home. These mouldings were known for their light bright colours & marbled effects, a first for plastic, which until the invention of thiourea formaldehyde in 1924 had been restricted the dark colours of Bakelite.
In 1924, Edmund Rossiter, a research chemist for The British Cyanides Company Ltd. (later to become British Industrial Plastics), developed a process for the condensation of Thiourea with Formaldehyde. The result of the process was the production of a “water-white” synthetic resin syrup. This was a major breakthrough in the development of plastics as prior to this, the phenolic resins used in the production of Bakelite had been straw coloured or brown. In 1925, processes were developed to turn this “water-white” syrup into white and pale-coloured moulding powders by combining the resin with cellulose pulp. These became known as BEETLE moulding powders, the company’s logo had been a scarab beetle, and were the first white ‘paper filled’ moulding powders to be produced anywhere in the world. In 1925, a new company was established in order to produce these new moulding powders, this company was known as The Beetle Products Co. Ltd.
Before too long these moulding powders were being used by several companies, including Brookes and Adams, who were already producing tableware and household items in phenolic materials under the trade name of BandA Ware and appreciated the merits of Beetle. Soon producing a range of articles in pale colours and marbled effects BANDALASTA was born.
A significant point in the success of BANDALASTA came when The Beetle Products Co. Ltd. managed to persuade Harrods of London to mount a display of Beetle products in November 1926. The display of tableware from Brookes & Adams Ltd., The Streetly Manufacturing Co Ltd., and Thomas De La Rue & Co Ltd. was a huge hit and Harrods had to give more floor space to the display to cope with the demand. The success at Harrods was followed by displays at some of London’s other top stores including, Selfridges, John Lewis and Peter Jones.
A few months later a new subsidiary of The British Cyanides Company Ltd., Beatl Sales Ltd was formed. It’s purpose was to act as a sales agent for the moulding companies, buying the products from the moulders and invoicing customers. Beatl Sales Ltd. was also responsible for organising and staffing the displays in the London stores.
In 1927, Beatl Sales Ltd. opened a shop in London’s Regent Street called, surprisingly, The Beatl Shop. The shop sold Beatl products from various manufacturers, but the three main ones were “M.L.”, “Linga Longa” and of course “BANDALASTA”. Beatl Sales continued for a few years,.
The increasing demand for Beetle moulding powders lead to the development of a quicker curing and easier to handle material. A straight Urea moulding powder known as Beetle Industrial was produced. Like the original Beetle it was still a paper filled material supplied in white, translucent, and pastel shades but no longer in the fine powder needed to achieve the marbled effects of the early Bandalasta.
(Extract from an original Brookes & Adams Bandalasta catalogue)
Delightful Colours ~ Light in Weight
Bandalasta is not china – not glass. What is it?
One of the first questions one asks is “what is BANDALASTA?” Is it celluloid or is it made from Bakelite?
The answer to both these questions is No! Then what is it? To explain to the non-technical mind is rather difficult but broadly speaking it is made from synthetic resin. Not the resin one usually knows and uses for the violin bow, but a resin developed in the 1920’s made under British patents and from British materials discovered and developed by British chemists.
Formaldehyde is combined with other chemical products to produce this resin which is perfectly colourless and not brown as is the case of the ordinary resin which is the gum of a tree.
This synthetic resin is ground up with a suitable filler and a dye to produce the required colour is added. The result is a fine powder having the appearance in the lighter shades of flour. The required quantity of this powder is taken the various colours being carefully weighed and blended by skilled workmen, the quantity being sufficient to fill the mould producing the shape required. The article is then moulded or shaped under pressure of 2 tons to the square inch in hardened and beautifully polished steel dies hydraulic machinery giving pressures up to some hundreds of tons being used. Heat and pressure is maintained for several minutes when a chemical change takes place the resin hardens and the article takes the shape of the mould. At the end of this time the resulting piece of BANDALASTA is removed from the mould and allowed to cool and it cannot be again softened by subsequent heating.
The edges are then trimmed and the surface polished by special machinery and the result is the beautiful BANDALASTA article which cannot be successfully imitated by any other process.
NOTE
Articles made from this special material and by this process are known by the general trade name of “Beatl” – not china – nor glass- not crock – not porcelain but Beatl. In the same way there are different kinds of china etc there are different kinds of Beatl but it is sufficient to glance the pages of this book or examine the range of BANDALASTA patterns to assure oneself that in buying BANDALSTA you are buying Beatl at its best. BANDALASTA is the original make of this class of ware and can show an almost unlimited range of patterns second to none in artistic merit or for general utility purposes.
ADVANTAGES
BANDALASTA Ware has, amongst others, the following distinctive points: beautiful and attractive colours, lightness, non-fragility ; all these advantages making it eminently suitable for use in the Home, Garden, for Motoring. Picnicing, Boating, Camping, etc. It has NO SMELL OR TASTE.
COLOUR
BANDALASTA is made in a variety of beautiful marbled and translucent pastel shades. many of which are illustrated in colour on pages 3 and 5, and a complete list of the stock colours is given on page 6. The makers cannot undertake to make special colours or to match other colours than those listed, but as there are 24 distinct colours from which to select, a very wide range of choice is offered. In the Marbled shades no two pieces are exactly alike, but all the pieces of the same colour number arc blended so that they can be built up in complete sets,
CLEANING
BANDALASTA should be washed with soap and hot water, but washing soda must not be used or the surface may be roughened. The colours do not wash off, as they go “right through” the material, and are not simply on the surface,
STAINS
BANDALASTA is not stained when used for fruit, etc., but after continued use for tea and coffee a deposit is formed on the surface this is not a stain which penetrates the material. This can be removed by rubbing with the thumb and a little moist salt, or with “Glitto.” Do not use rough, gritty cleaners! Pieces can also be polished with liquid metal polish and afterwards washed in warm, soapy water to remove the smell of the polish.
LIGHTNESS
BANDALASTA is extremely light: for instance, the complete Morning Tea Set, with Tray and Teapot T42P. weighs only 1 3/4 lbs. Compare this with a similar article in china, which would weigh at least twice as much. Here is what you have been looking for; for your out-door Picnics, Motoring. Camping or Boating parties. Four Picnic Cups, Saucers and Plates also weigh only 1 3/4. lbs.
NON-FRAGILE
BANDALASTA is NOT sold as being UNBREAKABLE, a claim which would be absurd, but the makers do claim that, given equal treatment, BANDALASTA will not fracture so easily as glass or china. Plates or similar flat articles will stand much rougher treatment than deep articles such as drinking horns or cups.
REPAIRS
The makers are unable to repair broken pieces of BANDALASTA, but pieces which are screwed together can be supplied with new parts if one piece is broken. Cups and Saucers can be had separately to replace broken or worn sets.
ORDERING
In order to facilitate ordering, every BANDALASTA piece is marked with the piece or pattern number on the bottom, and it is only necessary to quote this, together with the colour reference, for repeats. The colour reference can be obtained by referring to the standard colour list on page 6. A guide to the colour reference is also given on the colour pages of this booklet, but these must not be taken too literally owing to the impossibility of correctly rendering the colours in printing.
CAUTION
Whilst BANDALASTA will stand considerably more rough treatment than china or ,glass it is advisable to exercise care by not pouring boiling liquids such as milk, etc., into BANDALASTA vessels. Except for making tea it should not be necessary to pour absolutely boiling liquid into jugs or beakers, etc.. if a little care is taken in this respect the life of the articles will be considerably prolonged.

Classic Land Rover steering wheel restoration.
Charlesworths have new tooling which now enables us to re-mould your original worn / cracked classic Land rover or vintage spoked (banjo) steering wheel rim in the original ebonite material.

Ebonite was developed in the early 1800’s and is made from natural rubber. It’s obtained by a process called vulcanisation, which hardens the rubber to make it more durable. The rubber is then cured, becoming rigid and inelastic. This material was originally intended to be a substitute for ebony wood, so it was given the name ebonite. The curing process is exactly how the original steering wheels were moulded, and as a result, slight imperfections will be present in the final moulding.
Early uses for the material were as a replacement for ebony and as a jet replacement for jewellery. As early steering wheels were constructed with wooden rims finished in black, Ebonite was the ideal material to replicate the wood rim but allow for early mass production volumes. Once moulded wheels became standard, ebonite was replaced by more modern materials, such as filled bakelite and celluloid.
The names ebonite, vulcanite and hard rubber are all applied to the hard products obtained by heating a mixture of rubber with about half its weight in sulphur, and are sometimes used interchangeably. However, generally the name ebonite is restricted to black materials of high quality, vulcanite to coloured varieties; and hard rubber is then applied to any other grade of rigid or almost rigid product.

HISTORY
The two pioneers of the rubber industry, Charles Goodyear in the U.S.A. and Thomas Hancock in Britain, both made ebonite during the 1840’s, the former by heating for a long period a mixture containing sufficient sulphur, and the latter by immersing thin strips of rubber in molten sulphur for some hours. Goodyear’s method proved to be the more convenient in practice, and technical development on these lines followed shortly afterwards in both countries. By the early 1850’s, however, Nelson Goodyear, brother of Charles, had taken a particular interest in hard rubber products, and Meyer had secured the first patents covering technical details of the process. The Goodyears’ also found that by varying the sulphur content it was possible to produce materials having different properties. These products were first classified as `caoutchouc enamel’ or `caoutchouc marble’ (the hardest of all), `caoutchouc ivory’, and `caoutchouc whalebone’ (the most flexible). These specimens were shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and included carved book-covers, cameos, furniture, and fretted articles such as fans, besides hair combs, buttons, and many small sundries, some of which were moulded. By contrast, Hancock, confined himself to slabs, bars and sheets for manufacturing purposes and to articles of known utility.
By the 1860’s the ebonite industry had spread to Britain, Germany, France, and elsewhere; most of the machinery required for the manufacture had been developed, and some companies were finding profitable business in supplying the growing demand. The early years of the 20th century saw the foundation of the chemistry of vulcanisation, the establishment of an empirical formula for ebonite, and the start of investigations into its nature. Shortly afterwards the use of certain types of organic substance to accelerate vulcanisation was discovered, although it was not until the 1920’s that these came into general use.
The general trend towards more elaborate moulds and moulding techniques which so profoundly influenced the plastics industry in general during the 1920’s & 30’s was also evident in the moulding of ebonite goods.
RAW MATERIALS
Rubber is a natural elastomer obtained by acid coagulation of latex derived from plants, mainly trees of the genus Ilevea. By far the most important is the species indigenous to Brazil; namely Braziliensis. This species is grown on a large scale on plantations in Malaya, Ceylon, and Dutch possessions in the same area. Rubber is essentially a long chain hydrocarbon substance which is a polymer of isoprene. It is exported to the west mainly in the form of dry sheets or as ammonia-preserved latex or latex concentrate. Dry rubber is converted to a more or less plastic state by mastication—a process of kneading between hot rolls to expose a larger surface area to oxidation by air. The rubber is then ready to be vulcanised.
PREPARATION OF EBONITE MIXES
When rubber is heated with an excess of sulphur the degree of unsaturation diminishes, and the sulphur combines and becomes unextractable with boiling acetone. This process when carried to completion yields a hard product which is almost saturated and contains about 32% of combined sulphur.
If your classic 17″ bakelite type steering wheel is cracked, broken or leaches black & sticky when wet or damp we can help to refurbish it.
After removing the existing cracked material (often refered to as bakelite) from your wheel we can mould a new rim covering in it’s place.
This process allows us to replace all of the old material with new, without the need for fillers.

1960’s
An increase in demand for technical mouldings led to Percy designing & building another new type of Transfer Moulding machine. This time to achieve accuracy in moulding micro components, with or without inserts..
Our first automatic Injection Moulding machine, an Italian GBF, was bought in 1962, allowing long production runs for the first time. It was at this time Percy & Cyril made the conscious decision not to enter in the mass production market, quality & skill always our highest priorities. This decision led to an increase in supplying even more complex mouldings to the aerospace & electronics industries. By 1963 we were producing injection moulded components containing fragile glass inserts.
We bought our first automatic Compression Moulding press from Bradley & Turton in 1964, 24 hour production achieving shorter lead times.
Michael Cummings joined the business straight from school, as an apprentice in 1965. He quickly mastered the art of moulding, gaining experience to manage the moulding shop production.
1950’s
1950’s
By Easter 1950 Percy had a built our first Transfer Moulding press. This was designed, manufactured & assembled completely in house using our own tool-room, and are still very much in use today.
Cyril & Joyce’s daughter Jeannette was born in December.
In 1951 we started producing our first mouldings in thermoplastics -acrylic Diakon, nylon 11 Ralsin (now Rilsan) & Polystyrene
1952 was a key year for us, as Charlesworth & Son became a limited company, with Percy & Cyril as equal partners. Building work also commenced on our new purpose-built production plant at Curdworth.
Our long association with Morgan sports cars began in 1952, with Cyril buying his first 4-4 coupe.
Our involvement with the booming aircraft industry was to grow over the coming years. We were producing specialised parts for, among others; Armstrong Siddeley, Dunlop Rubber Company, GEC, Dowty Rotol, Teddington Aircraft Co. Along with producing precision parts for companies such as Taylor Taylor & Hobson (later to become Rank Taylor Hobson, now part of AMETEK Ultra Precision Technologies).
1940’s
The outbreak of war in 1939 saw a massive decline in demand for Charlesworth Mouldings existing products. Percy began working with another local moulding company, but before long demand for plastic components to support the war effort had increased. 1941 saw Percy & Cyril form a business on their own as Charlesworth & Son. They started production from their home in Castle Bromwich. That first year saw them producing aircraft instrument housings, components for ships navigation & machine gun mounts. Their first customer was to be Thomas Walker & Sons.
In 1943 Charlesworth & Son moved to premises in Water Orton.
Joyce Mortiboys joined the company in 1944 & started work in the office, we were now employing 12 people
After the war production changed to producing parts for domestic appliances, industrial switchgear & instrumentation
Cyril & Joyce were married in 1948 at St Mary and St Margaret’s Church, Castle Bromwich.
By 1949 we were producing many technical components with metal inserts. This led to Percy designing our own unique Transfer Moulding machine to allow us to produce these with greater accuracy.
Early Years
Willie J Charlesworth was born in Nottingham in 1864. He became a skilled toolmaker, working all over the country in places such as Woolwich Arsenal, London; Grantham; West Hartlepool; Bristol. Moving to Aston, Birmingham in the 1890’s working for Webley & Scott, Wolseley, Austin & Thomas Walker & Son.
By 1897 he had started his own manufacturing business in Aston producing taps, gauges & other turned parts.
In 1901 Willie J expanded his business, buying a bicycle shop in Washwood Heath, where he also manufactured “Mighty Atom” cycles and sidecars.
1902 saw another son, Percy W L Charlesworth, born. Followed, in 1903, by Leslie G G Charlesworth.
In 1908 Willie J rented a small factory at 88 Aston St, Birmingham. Where he soon began making metal parts for the new wireless industry, along with other capstan work. Percy became his first employee in 1917.
Percy & Willie J started to experiment with Compression Moulding Bakelite, in 1924, thus becoming Damard Lacquer Co’s (later to become Bakelite) first customer in Birmingham.
Cyril E Charlesworth, Percy’s son born was born in 1925.
By the time of the 1927 British Industrial Fair, Willie J & Percy were firmly established in the plastics trade. They exhibited with Bakelite & Birmingham Gas to demonstrate Compression Moulding.
During 1929 Willie J & Percy took out a lease on land at Stechford, where they had a new factory built. The market for new & revolutionary plastic products was flourishing. In 1934 Charlesworth Mouldings Ltd became a registered company, with Willie J & three of his sons Percy, Les & William as directors.
Land Rover Steering Wheel removal
Steering wheel removal.
If you require some instructions to help with the removal of your Land Rover steering wheel or horn button / dip switch assembly we have a short guide based on our own experience.
Land Rover Series One Steering Wheel Removal
Proceed with care. This is only a guide your vehicle may be different.
The bakelite wheel centre, horn button & dip switch assembly is attached to a stator tube which runs inside the steering column.
You must remove this complete assembly before attempting to remove the steering wheel.
Firstly the horn & dip switch wires need to be disconnected from your wiring loom.
Follow the wires from where they enter the bottom of the steering column (in the wheel arch).
They should go into a junction box on the bulkhead in the engine bay.
Straighten the wires so they will feed up the steering column easily.
Slide the stator tube end cap off over the wires.
Undo the stator tube clamp bolt at the bottom of the steering box.
Any oil in the steering box will drain out.
Do not lever the bakelite horn surround. It will break.
You should now be able to push the stator tube up the steering column to remove the complete steering wheel centre still attached to the stator tube, as one unit, through the centre of the steering wheel.
Undo and completely remove the steering wheel clamp bolt.
The steering wheel will now either easily slide off the splines or not!
If not….
Spray loads of release oil onto the splines.
Gently prise the split open. The casting is soft, take great care not to damage.
It should then be possible to carefully persuade the steering wheel to move using plenty of push-pull-shake and patience!
